Best Months for a Greek Destination Wedding

There is something about Greece that seems made for weddings.

The light is softer. Dinner begins later. Tables stretch beneath olive trees, music carries into the evening and celebrations have a wonderful way of feeling both elevated and completely at ease.

But choosing Greece is only the beginning. The month you marry will influence almost every part of the experience, from the weather and atmosphere to travel costs, venue availability and how comfortably your guests can enjoy the day.

While Greece has a typically Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and long periods of sunshine, conditions vary between its islands, cities and mainland regions. The warmest part of the year usually falls between late July and early August, when average maximum temperatures across the country can reach approximately 29°C to 35°C.

For most destination weddings, I find that May, June, September and early October offer the most appealing balance.

They are warm enough for outdoor ceremonies and dinners, but generally more comfortable than the height of summer. They can also give couples and their guests a more relaxed experience of Greece, away from the busiest weeks of July and August.

That does not mean there is one perfect month for every Greek wedding. The right date depends on where you are marrying, the kind of celebration you want and what matters most to you and your guests.

Here is what I would consider before choosing yours.

Is There a Best Month to Get Married in Greece?

If I had to choose one period for a destination wedding in Greece, I would look between late May and late June, or from early to mid-September.

These periods usually offer the qualities couples imagine when they picture a Greek wedding: beautiful light, warm evenings, outdoor dining and enough sunshine to turn the wedding into a longer holiday.

The difference is in the feeling.

A May wedding feels fresh and romantic. June feels unmistakably summery. September is warm, golden and beautifully settled, while early October offers something softer and more understated.

The best month is not simply the one with the highest temperatures. It is the month that allows the entire celebration to work well.

Getting Married in Greece in April

April marks the beginning of the destination-wedding season, but it should be approached with some flexibility.

The landscape is often green and full of spring colour, while popular destinations are quieter than they will be later in the year. This can create a wonderfully private atmosphere, particularly for an intimate wedding at a countryside estate, vineyard or historic property.

However, temperatures can still be changeable and evenings may feel cool. Rain is also more possible than during the summer months, so an attractive and properly considered indoor alternative is essential.

Couples considering April should also check the dates of Orthodox Easter. It is an important period in Greece, with increased domestic travel, religious observances and changes to the availability of some suppliers and services.

April may suit you if:

  • You are planning a smaller, more intimate celebration.

  • You prefer mild temperatures to intense heat.

  • Your venue has equally beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces.

  • You are comfortable building flexibility into the schedule.

Getting Married in Greece in May

May is one of my favourite months for a Greek destination wedding.

Greece is beginning to feel summery, but the intensity of peak season has not yet arrived. The landscape still has some of its spring freshness, the days are becoming warmer and many destinations feel lively without being overwhelmed.

Later May is particularly appealing for outdoor ceremonies, courtyard receptions and long dinners beneath the stars. Guests can usually enjoy the destination beyond the wedding itself, whether that means time in Athens, a few days on an island or a longer stay in the Peloponnese.

Sea temperatures may feel cooler than they do later in the summer, but for couples prioritising atmosphere, comfort and beautiful surroundings, May is an excellent option.

May may suit you if:

  • You want warm weather without the height of summer.

  • You would like a garden, vineyard or olive-grove setting.

  • You are inviting guests who may find extreme heat uncomfortable.

  • You want your wedding weekend to feel spacious and unhurried.

Getting Married in Greece in June

June brings the arrival of the Greek summer.

The days are long, the weather is usually warm and evenings lend themselves beautifully to outdoor dinners and late-night celebrations. It is an especially good month for couples who want a coastal setting without committing to the more intense heat and visitor numbers of July or August.

For an international guest list, June can also work well because it falls before the main European school-holiday period. Flights and accommodation still need to be secured early, particularly for well-known islands, but guests may have more options than they would later in the summer.

By late June, temperatures can already be high. I would still consider the ceremony time carefully, provide shade and water for guests, and avoid leaving anyone standing in direct afternoon sun.

June may suit you if:

  • You want a true summer wedding.

  • An outdoor ceremony and reception are central to your plans.

  • You want long daylight hours and warm evenings.

  • You would prefer to marry before the busiest summer weeks.

Getting Married in Greece in July

July delivers the Greece many couples have imagined: bright blue skies, warm seas, buzzing islands and evenings that seem to go on forever.

It is also hot, busy and in high demand.

A July wedding can be spectacular, but it requires thoughtful planning. Ceremonies should usually take place later in the day, and guest comfort must be treated as part of the design rather than an afterthought.

Shade, cold water, fans, air-conditioned transport and a realistic photography schedule all matter. So does the venue itself. A beautiful terrace may look perfect in photographs, but you need to understand how exposed it is to the sun and wind at the exact time your ceremony will take place.

Flights, ferries and accommodation can also become more expensive, particularly in the most popular destinations. Save-the-dates should be sent early so guests have time to plan.

July may suit you if:

  • Hot weather is part of the appeal.

  • You want the energy of Greece in full summer.

  • Your venue is designed to manage heat comfortably.

  • Your guests can book their travel well in advance.

Getting Married in Greece in August

August is Greece at its most energetic—and often its hottest and busiest.

Beaches, islands, hotels and restaurants are in peak season. Greeks living abroad frequently return home, domestic travel increases and many destinations feel wonderfully alive.

For the right couple, that atmosphere can be part of the magic. But August is not automatically the best choice simply because it appears to promise the most reliable sunshine.

Heat can affect the ceremony, flowers, food, transport, photography and how long guests are comfortable outdoors. Popular venues and suppliers may be booked well in advance, while travel and accommodation costs can be higher.

Wind is another important consideration, particularly in the Cyclades. The seasonal meltemi can provide welcome relief from the heat, but it can also affect ferries, outdoor styling, sound and exposed ceremony locations.

None of this makes an August wedding impossible. It simply means the venue, timeline and guest experience need to be planned around the realities of the season.

August may suit you if:

  • You love the energy of peak summer.

  • Your guests are already likely to be travelling during the holidays.

  • You have chosen a venue with shaded or air-conditioned areas.

  • You are prepared to plan and book well in advance.

Getting Married in Greece in September

September is one of the strongest months for a destination wedding in Greece.

The sea has had the entire summer to warm, the days remain beautifully sunny and evenings are often comfortable enough for celebrations outdoors. There is still a definite sense of summer, but the atmosphere begins to soften as the busiest holiday period comes to an end.

The light in September can be particularly beautiful. It feels warmer and more golden than the brightness of midsummer, which works wonderfully for ceremonies, portraits and outdoor dinners.

Early September can still be hot, especially in southern Greece and on islands such as Crete and Rhodes. By the latter part of the month, conditions may become less predictable, depending on the region.

For many of our couples, however, September offers the balance they are looking for: warmth, atmosphere and a guest experience that feels luxurious without being dictated by peak-season intensity.

September may suit you if:

  • You want warm seas and summery weather.

  • You prefer a softer atmosphere than July or August.

  • Guest comfort is a priority.

  • You love golden light and outdoor evening celebrations.

Getting Married in Greece in October

October can be one of Greece’s most beautiful and underestimated wedding months.

The pace is slower, the light is gentle and the landscape begins to take on a different character. In southern destinations, early October can still feel wonderfully warm, particularly during the day.

It can be especially lovely for weddings in Athens, the Athens Riviera, Crete, Rhodes, Kalamata and the wider Peloponnese, where couples may be able to create a celebration that still feels Mediterranean without the height-of-summer atmosphere.

However, October requires a little more flexibility. Even if the forecast looks promising, an indoor or covered alternative should be part of the original design. It should feel like a second version of the wedding rather than an emergency backup reluctantly assembled at the last minute.

Some seasonal island hotels, venues and restaurants also begin reducing their services or closing later in October. This is why the exact destination matters as much as the month.

October may suit you if:

  • You want a quieter and more intimate experience of Greece.

  • You are drawn to warmer, softer autumnal styling.

  • You are marrying in Athens or southern mainland Greece.

  • Your venue has an indoor option you would genuinely be happy to use.

What About a Winter Wedding in Greece?

Greece should not be dismissed during the winter, particularly for couples considering Athens or a mainland celebration.

A winter wedding could take place in a historic hotel, private residence, city venue or mountain setting. It may feel more intimate and atmospheric than a traditional island wedding, with candlelight, seasonal food and a very different interpretation of Greek hospitality.

However, this is not the season to plan around guaranteed sunshine or an entirely outdoor experience. Ferry schedules and seasonal closures may also limit island options.

A winter wedding in Greece works best when the season is embraced rather than treated as an attempt to recreate summer.

The Best Months for Different Greek Wedding Destinations

Greece is not one single climate or wedding experience. The most suitable period will change depending on where you choose to celebrate.

The Athens Riviera

The Athens Riviera can work from spring into autumn, with May, June, September and early October offering particularly appealing conditions.

It is also convenient for international guests because they can fly directly into Athens without needing an additional ferry or domestic connection.

The Cyclades

For Mykonos, Paros, Naxos and neighbouring islands, I would generally consider late May, June and September.

July and August remain popular, but couples need to think carefully about heat, wind, accommodation availability and ferry travel.

Crete and Rhodes

The more southerly islands often enjoy a longer warm season. May, June, September and early October can all work beautifully, depending on the exact venue.

Crete is a large island, so conditions, journey times and logistics should always be assessed according to the specific location rather than the island as a whole.

Kalamata and the Peloponnese

Kalamata and the wider Peloponnese are wonderful choices for couples drawn to olive groves, coastal landscapes and a quieter kind of Greek luxury.

May, June, September and early October are especially attractive. Resorts and private estates across Messinia can offer space for a full wedding weekend while allowing guests to experience the food, landscape and hospitality of the region.

Northern Greece

Thessaloniki, Halkidiki and northern mainland destinations can experience greater seasonal variation than southern Greece.

Late May, June and early September are often the strongest periods for an outdoor celebration, but the exact setting and elevation should be considered.

The Month Is Only Part of the Decision

Weather matters, but it should not be the only factor guiding your date.

Before confirming a Greek destination wedding, I would also consider:

  • Flight routes and how easily guests can reach the destination

  • Ferry schedules and the possibility of disruption

  • Hotel availability and minimum-stay requirements

  • Greek public and religious holidays

  • Local festivals or major events

  • School holidays in the countries your guests are travelling from

  • Venue and supplier availability

  • Sunset time and the direction of light at the venue

  • Seasonal wind patterns

  • Whether the indoor alternative feels as considered as the outdoor plan

For American couples in particular, the journey should be assessed from the guest’s front door rather than only from the nearest international airport.

A venue may look close to Athens on a map but still require a flight, ferry, private transfer and overnight stay. A slightly less obvious destination with a simpler route can sometimes create a far better experience.

So, When Should You Get Married in Greece?

For most couples, my recommendations would be:

  • Late May for spring beauty and comfortable warmth

  • June for long days and the beginning of summer

  • September for warm seas, golden light and a softer pace

  • Early October for a more intimate, understated celebration in the right destination

July and August can still be extraordinary, but they need to be chosen with a clear understanding of the heat, crowds, costs and logistics involved.

The best date is the one that works not only in photographs, but across the entire experience: the journey, the welcome, the ceremony, the meal and the days your guests spend together in Greece.

Because a destination wedding is never only about the wedding day.

It is about the feeling of arriving somewhere special, gathering the people you love and allowing them to experience a place through your celebration.

And when the month, setting and pace are chosen well, Greece does that exceptionally.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month for a wedding in Greece?

May, June and September are generally the strongest months for a Greek destination wedding. They offer warm weather and excellent conditions for outdoor celebrations without the full intensity of peak summer.

Is May warm enough for a wedding in Greece?

May can be beautifully warm, particularly later in the month and in southern Greece. Evenings may be cooler, so couples should consider heaters, wraps or a partially covered setting.

Is June or September better for a Greek wedding?

June offers longer days and the fresh beginning of summer. September usually has warmer seas and softer, golden light. The better option depends on the destination, desired atmosphere and travel needs of your guests.

Is Greece too hot for a wedding in August?

August can be extremely hot, particularly during the afternoon. Weddings are still possible, but ceremonies should be scheduled later and venues should provide shade, air-conditioned spaces and plenty of water.

Can you get married in Greece in October?

Yes. Early October can be beautiful in Athens, Crete, Rhodes, Kalamata and other southern or mainland destinations. A strong wet-weather alternative is essential, and couples should confirm that seasonal venues and hotels remain fully operational.

How far ahead should we book a Greek destination wedding?

For a popular venue or a wedding between May and September, beginning the process 18 to 24 months in advance is sensible. More time may be needed for a large guest list or a highly sought-after date.
