10 European Wedding Destinations Americans Should Know About

From the Serenity Lens — by Sandie Xenia, Founder of Serenity

When couples from the US and Canada first picture a European wedding, the same few places tend to come to mind.

Lake Como. The Amalfi Coast. Santorini. Tuscany.

They are popular for good reason, but they are far from the whole story.

Across Europe, there are coastal villages, countryside estates and resort destinations that offer their own combination of food, architecture, landscape and hospitality. Exploring them can help you find a setting that feels personal to your celebration.

For guests travelling from North America, the destination becomes part of the occasion. The welcome dinner, the afternoon exploring and the final lunch together can matter almost as much as the wedding itself.

Here are ten destinations I would love more couples to consider, through the Serenity lens.

1. Montenegro: the Bay of Kotor

Montenegro brings drama from the landscape itself.

Around the Bay of Kotor, mountains rise above the Adriatic water, with historic settlements along the shore. The UNESCO-listed natural and cultural region around Kotor recognises the relationship between that landscape and its architectural heritage.

There is a contemporary side to the destination too. Porto Montenegro in Tivat offers a marina setting, while boat excursions provide another way to experience the bay.

For a wedding, I would explore how those different settings could shape the celebration: a waterfront welcome evening, a venue with mountain-backed views and time for guests to discover the surrounding towns.

Best for: couples drawn to striking coastal scenery, historic character and an Adriatic wedding experience.

The Serenity consideration: choose the accommodation base alongside the venue. Assess journeys between events and the complete proposal before making assumptions about privacy or price.

2. Sintra and the surrounding towns, Portugal

Sintra has a romance rooted in its setting: palaces, gardens and wooded hills close to the Atlantic. Its UNESCO-listed cultural landscape brings together architecture and vegetation in a particularly distinctive way.

Looking beyond Sintra itself opens up further possibilities. Colares, Azenhas do Mar, Cascais and Estoril bring coastal villages and seaside settings into the wider search.

I would consider this area for couples who love architectural character and want their guests to have several ways to enjoy the trip.

A garden celebration, historic property or coastal setting could each provide a different direction. Guests could also include Lisbon in their wider itinerary.

Best for: romantic weddings with heritage, gardens and opportunities to explore both city and coast.

The Serenity consideration: compare the exact locations rather than treating the whole area as one venue destination. Confirm event permissions, accommodation and transfer routes for each shortlisted property.

3. Halkidiki, Greece

Halkidiki deserves a place on the shortlist of couples whose Greek wedding research has focused mainly on the islands.

This mainland peninsula extends east of Thessaloniki into the Aegean, with Kassandra and Sithonia offering different coastal settings to explore.

For couples imagining several days by the sea, I would look at how a resort could bring accommodation, dining and celebration spaces together.

The Danai is one property I would recommend considering. Its event settings include the beach, vineyard, gardens and villas, creating possibilities for different moments across a wedding celebration. The arrangements would depend on your dates, guest count and the spaces reserved.

Best for: couples who want a Greek coastal wedding with accommodation and hospitality central to the experience.

The Serenity consideration: check room commitments, privacy and event capacities individually. Plan arrivals through Thessaloniki around the property’s location and your guests’ travel arrangements.

4. Kalamata and Costa Navarino, Messinia, Greece

Messinia is a part of Greece I want more international couples to consider.

Kalamata offers a city base with a waterfront, food culture and opportunities to explore the wider region. Costa Navarino provides a different, resort-based experience elsewhere in Messinia, with several properties and settings for wedding celebrations.

The region brings together coastal landscapes and the olive-growing character of the southwest Peloponnese.

It also feels particularly relevant to Serenity through our ongoing wedding planning work there. Developing ceremony settings, terrace dining, accommodation arrangements and additional events shows how much the experience depends on the property and layout you choose.

Best for: couples imagining a luxury coastal celebration with several days of hospitality around it.

The Serenity consideration: distinguish between a Kalamata-based wedding and a Costa Navarino celebration. Compare the specific properties, accommodation, event locations and transport arrangements.

5. Paphos, Cyprus

Cyprus has a special place in my recommendations, and Paphos deserves a place on this list.

The region combines coastal settings with historic sites and established wedding hospitality. Its tourism board highlights hotel ceremonies in gardens, on beaches and in private chapels, depending on the property.

I would consider Paphos for couples who want their wedding to form part of a Mediterranean stay, with time to enjoy the destination together.

That could mean a resort celebration with guests close by, an intimate gathering or several events across the trip. Your numbers, budget and preferred level of privacy will shape the right option.

Best for: couples drawn to coastal hospitality, history and a wedding that becomes part of a longer stay.

The Serenity consideration: compare complete proposals, including room arrangements and event-space exclusivity. Choose the date and ceremony time with guest comfort, daylight and travel options in mind.

6. Cap Ferret, France

Cap Ferret offers a distinctive kind of coastal French atmosphere.

The peninsula sits between the Atlantic and the Arcachon Basin, with pine woodland, beaches and oyster villages contributing to its character. Places such as L’Herbe and Le Canon connect the landscape with the area’s food and maritime heritage.

I would consider it for couples who imagine a celebration shaped by seafood, local wine and unhurried time together.

The wider destination can provide much of the inspiration: waterfront textures, natural materials and an atmosphere that feels considered without needing elaborate decoration.

Best for: relaxed coastal celebrations with a strong connection to food and place.

The Serenity consideration: establish which properties can support your event before building the plans around them. Check accommodation availability, supplier access and transport if guests will stay across several locations.

7. Siena and the Tuscan countryside, Italy

Siena offers a wonderful combination of city architecture and countryside.

Its UNESCO-listed historic centre gives guests a rich setting to explore, while the surrounding region opens up another way to experience Tuscany.

For a wedding, I would consider Siena and its countryside together.

A rural property could provide the setting for the celebration, with the city adding another layer to the guest itinerary. Long tables, thoughtful food and local wine feel like natural starting points for the design and hospitality.

The first decision is whether you want guests staying within the city or gathering at a countryside property. Each creates a different rhythm.

Best for: food- and wine-led celebrations with Tuscan scenery and a strong sense of history.

The Serenity consideration: assess accommodation and transport during the venue search. Confirm entertainment arrangements, access and any restrictions affecting the design before committing.

8. Provence, France: the Luberon and surrounding countryside

Provence brings colour, texture and a countryside atmosphere that can guide the whole celebration.

In the Luberon, properties such as La Bastide de Marie offer wedding-weekend settings among gardens, terraces and vineyards. That illustrates the kind of experience couples can explore in the region.

I would consider this area for couples who imagine a garden ceremony, a beautifully laid table and several days at a characterful property.

The appeal is in allowing the setting to lead: stone, planting, light and food can provide a strong foundation for the design.

Choose the property and date together, particularly if seasonal scenery is important to you.

Best for: romantic countryside celebrations with garden-party elegance and time to settle in.

The Serenity consideration: confirm what the property looks like around your date, along with shade, weather backup and accommodation commitments. Establish the arrangements for a legal or symbolic ceremony early.

9. Puglia, Italy

Puglia adds southern Italian architecture and rural character to the list.

The Valle d’Itria is known for its trulli, villages and agricultural estates, with Alberobello, Locorotondo and Cisternino offering places for guests to explore. Traditional masserie form part of the region’s landscape and agricultural heritage.

For a wedding, I would explore properties where the buildings, courtyards and surrounding land already provide much of the atmosphere.

This is a destination I would consider for couples who want food and a sense of place to run through the whole celebration, from the welcome evening to the final meal together.

A beautiful estate still needs to be assessed against your guest count, service requirements and plans.

Best for: couples drawn to estate settings, southern Italian food and a celebration with a distinctive local character.

The Serenity consideration: compare accommodation capacity with event capacity. Confirm exclusivity, permitted uses, production requirements and guest transport for the individual property.

10. Mallorca, Spain

Mallorca offers several distinct directions for a wedding.

In the northwest, the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana landscape includes mountain terrain, agricultural terraces and villages. Around Deià, forests, olive groves and stone buildings create a hillside setting close to the sea.

I would consider Mallorca for couples who want to explore a countryside estate, coastal hotel or village setting and build a wider stay around the celebration.

The choice of location matters. A wedding near the mountains will create a different guest experience from one based in Palma or elsewhere along the coast.

Best for: Mediterranean celebrations combining island scenery, architectural character and a choice of coastal or countryside settings.

The Serenity consideration: decide on the accommodation base early. Check access, journey times, event permissions and music arrangements for the exact venue. A lively evening needs a property whose confirmed timings support it.

Choosing your destination, through the Serenity lens

I would begin with your guest list, season, budget and the experience you want to host.

Some couples want everyone staying together. Others want guests to explore independently between events. Privacy, architecture, food, the sea and live music may each carry a different weight in the decision.

Those priorities turn a broad destination list into a meaningful shortlist.

For guests travelling from the US or Canada, assess flight options for the proposed dates before committing. Consider the whole journey, including connections, onward transfers and accommodation.

Then compare the complete wedding experience behind each option: the venue, hospitality, production, additional events and guest arrangements.

There is real pleasure in finding a place that feels right. It might be the landscape of Messinia, the architecture around Sintra, the oyster villages of Cap Ferret or a courtyard in Puglia.

Understanding how the destination works allows you to enjoy what drew you there in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

Which European wedding destination is easiest for American guests?

It depends on where guests are travelling from and the proposed dates. Compare flight options, connections and the onward journey to the actual venue. The most convenient airport does not always make the whole trip the easiest.

Where should we look for a larger wedding in Greece?

Halkidiki and Costa Navarino are worth exploring for resort-based celebrations. Confirm the capacity of the individual event spaces, accommodation and weather backup against your guest count.

Can we book a private estate for the whole wedding weekend?

Potentially, but arrangements vary. Establish whether exclusive use covers accommodation and event spaces, which nights are required and what additional staffing or production is needed.
